What colour is a green screen?

The TimerPlan chroma panel fills a display with #00B140, the saturated green used for keying backdrops, and offers #0047BB blue for the shots where green is a problem. Green is chosen not because it is special but because almost nothing in an ordinary scene shares it โ€” skin, hair and most clothing sit far away from it, so software can separate subject from background cleanly.

Blue exists for the exceptions: a subject wearing green, holding something green, or with green in the branding. Film crews keep both for exactly this reason.

A monitor makes a small backdrop rather than a wall-sized one, so it suits a hand, a product, a pet or a head-and-shoulders shot on a phone. What matters more than the colour is the lighting: an evenly lit panel keys far better than a brighter, patchier one.

If the panel is behind the subject, something else has to light them โ€” the white screen on a second device is the usual answer, and warm or daylight white depending on the room. To check the panel for dirt or reflections before a take, the black screen shows what the green hides.

Frequently asked questions

Why green rather than blue?

Two reasons that have nothing to do with the colour itself. Digital sensors carry twice as many green photosites as red or blue, so the green channel is the least noisy one to key from; and green is further from human skin tones than blue is, which means less spill and fewer edge artefacts on a face. Blue was standard in the film era because film stock behaved differently, and it survives for shots where green is in the frame.

Does the exact hex value matter?

Less than the lighting, but it is worth getting right. #00B140 is what keying paint and backdrop fabric are made to, so matching it keeps the software’s default settings useful. Any strongly saturated green will key; a pale or greyish green will not, because keying works on saturation and hue distance rather than on brightness.

Can I really use a monitor as a green screen?

For a small subject, yes. A 27-inch screen behind a hand or a product is entirely workable, and a tablet behind a phone-held object is the classic setup for social video. What a screen cannot do is fill the frame behind a whole person โ€” for that you need a fabric backdrop, and the same rules about even lighting apply, only over a larger area.

How do I avoid green spill on the subject?

Distance and dimming. Spill is bounced light, so moving the subject away from the panel reduces it more than any software setting; if that is impossible, dim the panel โ€” a slightly darker green keys just as well and throws less light. Most keying software also has a spill suppression control, which is the last resort rather than the first.

How this works

The panel paints a flat, saturated colour with no gradient or texture, since keying software looks for a narrow range of hue and saturation and any variation across the background widens that range. The green is #00B140, the value used by keying backdrop materials, and the blue is #0047BB; both are set directly rather than derived, so what the screen emits is what the software expects. The dimmer composites black over the colour, which lowers brightness while keeping the hue โ€” useful for controlling spill without changing what the key is looking for. Full screen uses the Fullscreen API, the pointer and hint fade after three seconds, and a screen wake lock keeps the panel alive through a take.

Even light. A patchy backdrop is the usual cause of a ragged edge, not the wrong shade.
