What can a browser sleep timer actually do?
The TimerPlan sleep timer counts down quietly and fades the screen to black at zero โ and it cannot stop music playing in another app, which is the honest half of the answer. A web page has no control over Spotify, YouTube in another tab, or a television, so every page that promises to switch your music off is either describing its own player or describing something it does not do.
What it does do is worth having on a bedside screen. It runs without a chime unless you want one, it darkens the display at the end rather than leaving a lit rectangle in the room, and it holds the screen awake while it counts so that the number stays readable.
For anything that has to end sound, the setting belongs in the app playing it โ most players have a sleep timer of their own, and the list below says where.
Where the sleep timer lives in the things people actually fall asleep to:
| What is playing | Where its own sleep timer is |
|---|---|
| Spotify | Now playing โ the three-dot menu โ Sleep timer |
| YouTube | Settings โ Reminders (a bedtime prompt, not a stop) |
| Apple Music | Clock app โ Timer โ When Timer Ends โ Stop Playing |
| Podcast apps | Almost all have one on the playback screen |
| Television | The sleep button on the remote, or Settings โ Timers |
| Android, everything at once | Digital Wellbeing โ Bedtime mode |
This page is the one to use when what you want darkened is the screen itself โ a tablet propped up for a film, a laptop playing something in the corner of a room, a monitor left on in a bedroom.
For a countdown that ends at a set time instead of after a set length, the countdown timer counts to a moment on the clock. To be woken rather than to fall asleep, the online alarm clock is the right page and says the same honest thing about closed tabs. And for the light itself, the black screen is a page that is nothing but darkness, with no countdown at all.
Frequently asked questions
Why can't a website stop my music?
Because pages are sealed off from one another and from the rest of the device. A tab can control audio it created itself and nothing else โ not another tab, not an app, not a speaker on your network. That isolation is the reason browsing is safe, and a sleep timer is one of the few places where it feels like a limitation rather than a protection.
Where is the sleep timer in the app I am actually using?
Spotify has one under the now-playing menu, at the bottom; YouTube offers a bedtime reminder in settings rather than a true timer; Netflix has never shipped one and relies on the are-you-still-watching prompt; most television remotes have a sleep button that the set honours. On Android, a system bedtime mode can silence everything, and on iOS the Clock app’s timer can be set to stop playing rather than to ring.
Does the screen actually turn off, or just go black?
It goes black โ the page paints darkness, which removes the light from the room, and then releases the screen wake lock it was holding so the device can sleep normally on its own schedule. A page cannot turn a display off directly. On a phone left face-up, the practical difference is nil: the room goes dark and the phone sleeps a minute later.
Will an alarm wake me if I set a long one?
Only if the device stays awake, and a phone that locks will suspend the tab. This is a page for winding down rather than for waking up: use the phone’s own alarm clock for the morning, where the operating system guarantees the sound. The one here is deliberately silent by default for the same reason โ a chime at the end of a sleep timer is the opposite of what it is for.
How this works

A bedside screen, done quietly
Dark at the end. A timer that finishes by lighting up the room has misunderstood the request.
Silent by default. The alarm is off unless you turn it on, which is the reverse of every other timer here and correct for this one.
Honest about its reach. The page says what it cannot do, in the place where you would otherwise find out by lying awake at 2 am with the music still playing.
