The overlap runs from the latest start to the earliest finish, and its length is the third figure. A negative or tiny overlap is the honest answer that no time works for everybody, and it is far better found now than after three invitations.

Frequently asked questions

Why enter times in UTC rather than local?

Because UTC is the only clock with no daylight saving and no ambiguity, so the arithmetic is a straight comparison. Converting once per person is a small cost for an answer that cannot be wrong by an hour; the alternative is a sheet where two rows silently mean different things.

What if the overlap comes out negative?

Then there is no hour in the ordinary working day that suits everybody, which is a real answer rather than a failure. The usual fixes are to rotate which region takes the awkward hour, to split into two meetings, or to accept that one person joins early โ€” and knowing which of those you are choosing is the point.

Does daylight saving move the answer?

Yes, twice a year, and not on the same date everywhere โ€” the gap between the US and Europe changes for about three weeks each spring. Because rows are in UTC, the fix is to re-convert each person’s local hours after a clock change rather than to adjust the sheet.

How this works

Each row is a working window in UTC hours, and the row value is its length. The overlap is bounded by the latest start and the earliest finish across all rows, computed as column aggregates rather than by sorting, and its length is the difference between them; a negative result means the windows do not intersect at all. Half-hour offsets are supported because several zones use them โ€” India at UTC+5:30 and Nepal at UTC+5:45 are the common ones.
