How do you convert a time between zones?
The TimerPlan converter takes the time you give, removes the source zone’s offset to reach UTC, applies the target zone’s offset, and reports both the resulting time and whether it lands on another day. Both offsets are computed for today rather than looked up, which is the only way to get the weeks around a clock change right.
Those weeks are exactly when converting by hand goes wrong. The United States and Europe move their clocks on different dates, so the New York to London gap is five hours most of the year and four for about three weeks each spring.
The day marker matters as much as the time. A nine o’clock call in San Francisco is five in the afternoon in London the same day, but a five o’clock call is one in the morning tomorrow โ and the time alone does not tell you that.
Gaps that change during the year, which is most of the useful ones:
| Pair | Usual | For a few weeks |
|---|---|---|
| New York โ London | +5 h | +4 h in March, +6 h in early November |
| Los Angeles โ Berlin | +9 h | +8 h in March |
| London โ Sydney | +9 h | +11 h in the southern summer |
| New York โ Delhi | +9:30 h | +10:30 h in winter |
| Anywhere โ Arizona | fixed | Arizona never moves; everyone else does |
The southern hemisphere row is the one that surprises people: Australia’s clocks go forward when Europe’s go back, so the gap moves by two hours rather than one.
To watch several places at once rather than convert one time, use the world clock. To find the hours that work for everybody, the world meeting planner in time plans intersects working hours across a list of zones. For arithmetic within one zone โ adding a length, or the gap between two times โ use the time calculator and the time duration calculator.
Frequently asked questions
Why not just add the difference I remember?
Because the difference you remember is right for most of the year and wrong for the rest. Beyond the clock-change weeks, several countries have changed their rules recently and a few have abolished daylight saving altogether. Computing the two offsets for the date in question costs nothing and removes the whole class of error.
What does the day marker mean for a meeting invitation?
That you should say the date as well as the time, and say it in both places. Half of all cross-zone meeting mistakes are a correct time on the wrong day, and calendar software only saves you when everyone’s calendar has the right zone set โ which, for a person who travels, is often not the case.
Can I convert a time in the past or future?
This page converts for today, which covers the overwhelming majority of use. For a date months away the correct answer depends on whether daylight saving is in force on that date in both places, and that flips at different times in each hemisphere โ so an autumn meeting arranged in summer can shift by an hour. Where the date matters, set it in a calendar and let it hold the zones.
What is UTC, and is it the same as GMT?
UTC is the modern standard, defined by atomic clocks and kept within a second of the earth’s rotation; GMT is a time zone that happens to equal UTC in winter and shifts to UTC+1 in British summer. Every zone here is expressed as an offset from UTC, and that is what makes the arithmetic reliable โ UTC has no daylight saving and never will.
