Maximum light. The neutral choice for a video call when the room is dark.
Dimming lays a black veil over the panel — a browser cannot reach the backlight, so this changes the light in the room, not the power the screen draws.

What is a white screen used for?
The TimerPlan white screen turns a monitor into a soft light source: fill light for a video call in a dark room, a lightbox for tracing, and a flat field for checking a display after cleaning. A screen is a large, even, diffuse emitter, which is exactly what portrait lighting wants and what a bare lamp is not.
Four whites are offered because the right one depends on the room. Warm at about 3200 K matches household bulbs, daylight at 5500 K is close to what most cameras expect indoors, cool at 6500 K is the native white point of most monitors, and pure white is simply the brightest.
The dimmer lays a black veil over the colour rather than touching the backlight, which no web page can reach. The panel holds the screen awake while it is in full screen — otherwise the light goes out mid-call.
The four whites and where each one belongs:
| Panel | Roughly | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Pure white | — | You want maximum light and do not care about tint |
| Warm | 3200 K | The room is lit by household bulbs |
| Daylight | 5500 K | Daytime, or mixed lighting; the safe default on camera |
| Cool | 6500 K | Matching other monitors, or a deliberately crisp look |
Keyboard control works in full screen: left and right arrows step through the colours, up and down change the dimming, and escape leaves.
The opposite panel is the black screen, which shows everything a white one hides — dust, smears and reflections — and is the second half of cleaning a display. For a keying backdrop rather than a light, the green screen uses the standard chroma value. If what the screen should show is a number rather than a colour, the full screen clock and the classroom timer both fill a display the same way.
Frequently asked questions
Which white should I use for a video call?
Match the room. Under warm household bulbs, use the warm 3200 K panel or your face will read blue against the wall behind you; under daylight or LED panels, use 5500 K. If the room is dark and the screen is the only light, 5500 K is the safest default because most webcams are balanced near it. The one to avoid is pure white at full brightness at close range, which flattens a face and makes people squint.
Can I use a monitor as a lightbox for tracing?
Yes, and it is the cheapest lightbox there is. Lay the original on the screen, the blank sheet on top, and the white panel behind them does the rest; a laptop screen at maximum brightness carries two sheets of ordinary paper comfortably. Watch the pressure — pressing hard on an LCD leaves temporary marks — and prefer a matte screen if you have one, since gloss reflects the room back at you.
Does a white screen check for stuck pixels?
It shows up dust, smears, fingerprints and reflections, which is the usual reason people open one after cleaning. For panel faults specifically, a set of solid colours is used rather than white alone — but that is a hardware diagnostic rather than a lighting job, and it belongs to a testing tool rather than to this page.
Why not just turn my desk lamp up?
Because a lamp is a small, hard source and a monitor is a large, soft one. The size of the source relative to the subject is what decides how hard the shadows are, so a 27-inch screen at arm’s length gives shadows a lamp cannot, without any diffuser. It is also already pointing at you, already on, and free.
Does the dim slider save battery?
No. It puts a semi-transparent black layer over the colour, which genuinely reduces the light leaving the screen but changes nothing about the power the backlight draws — a browser has no access to display brightness. To save power, lower the brightness with the keys on your machine; to soften the light without leaving the page, use the slider.

Small practical notes
Distance beats brightness. A screen at arm’s length is soft; the same screen at thirty centimetres is harsh.
Off-axis is more flattering. Slightly to one side of the camera, not directly behind it.
Full screen matters. Browser chrome and a taskbar are grey, and grey next to white shows in the reflection in someone’s glasses.
